Ét is the most important romantic ballet.
It was first performed in 1841 in Paris with music by A.Adam
and choreography by I. Coralli - J Perrot,
with C Crisi and L Petipa
in the leading roles.
The role of Giselle is a challenge for each great ballerina,
as she is judged for her own approach of the role.
Giselle is young peasant girl, who fells in love with Albrecht,
without knowing that this nobleman is already engaged to Bathilde.
When the truth of his identity is revealed by Hilarion, (a gamekeeper
who loves Giselle) Giselle goes crazy and dies.
In the second act Albrecht goes to Giselle's tomb and at the
stroke of midnight the Willis appear lead by their Queen Myrtha.
Willis are the spirits of women that died betrayed little before
their marriage. In order to get their revenge from men, whoever
is caught by them, is to dance till exhaustion and die. Giselle
is called by the Queen of the Willis, Myrtha to wake up from
her grave and join them. However when then capture Albrecht,
who is grieving at Giselle's grave , it is Giselle that dances
in his place when he gets exhausted, because her love for him
exceeds the limits of death. The dancing continues till down,
when the Willis are forced to return powerless to their graves
and Albrecht is saved. Giselle is lost forever to the underworld,
leaving Albrecht, to grieve shattered.
