La Sylphide

It is the first completed romantic ballet, and the biggest success of the greatest romantic dancer, Marie Taglioni.

It was first performed in Paris in 1832 choreography by F. Taglioni and music by Schneitzhoeffer. However nowadays the choreography by A. Bournoville has been saved, music by Lovenskjold, which was performed in Copenhagen in 1836.

It is the story of James , a young farmer, who is visited by a sylph, on the eve of his marriage. He leaves his bride and friends and follows her to the woods of Scotland. To bind her forever to him, he accepts a magic shawl for the Witch Madge. When he puts the shawl around the sylphs shoulders, her wings fall of and she dies (which proves that love between people and spirits is worthless).

1999: the second act of this ballet was performed by the Thessalian Ballet Company.
Soloists:
Ioanna Lagou
Sergei Sergeev, Soloist of National Opera Sofia.
