It is a ballet that is based on a poem by Lord Byron.
It is a story of a Greek girl, Medora, who
is sold into slavery, but is miraculously saved by the pirate,
Conrad who becomes her lover. The two lovers
go through a lot of adventures: a shipwreck, the betrayal
of their companions and the power of the Pasha.
Even though it was first performed in Paris in 1856, choreography
by Maziller, the newer version has been saved,
choreography by M. Petipa, music by A.
Adam, R. Drigo et C. Pugni which was performed in
St. Petersburg in 1899.
M. Petipa created a ballet with exceptional
technical roles that gives the possibility to many principles
dancers to co-exist on the same stage. Many pieces from this
ballet are performed on their own for example:
-Pas des odalisques (women slaves dance)
-Pas de deux (which gave R Nureyef
and M. Fontegn their fame.)
1996: the "Pas de Deux"
was performed by the Professional Level Preparatory Class
of the Municipal Ballet School of Larissa. Soloists:
Roula Georgouli,
Momtsil Blademov, Soloist of National Opera Sofia.
